Beauty and Hygiene: Can I get a pedicure during pregnancy? The same rules apply for pedicures as manicures. Bring your own instruments (nail file, cuticle clipper, etc.) from home to reduce infection risk. Steer clear of salons with a particularly strong chemical odor -- look for those with air-conditioning or fans so you don't inhale fumes. If you do your nails at home, apply polish in a well-ventilated area (near an open window) for the same reason. Also, say no to foot massages, which can stimulate fetal activity and contractions. Can I get a manicure during pregnancy? Manicures are fine, but bring your own instruments (nail file, cuticle clipper, etc.) from home to reduce infection risk. Steer clear of salons with a particularly strong chemical odor -- look for those with air-conditioning or fans so you don't inhale fumes. If you do your nails at home, apply polish in a well-ventilated area (near an open window) for the same reason. Can I color my hair during pregnancy? While all the available research suggests that coloring your hair during pregnancy is safe (there's no data suggesting that it increases the risk of birth defects or miscarriage), it's a good idea to schedule appointments after your first trimester just to be on the extra-safe side. By then, much major fetal organ development is complete. Can I use a hot tub or sauna during pregnancy? Hot tubs and saunas are out while you're expecting because their extreme heat might affect your baby's in utero development. Can I use a Jacuzzi during pregnancy? Yes, as long as the water is no warmer than 100°F. Can I take a bath during pregnancy? Yes, as long as the water is no warmer than 100°F. Can I use aromatherapy during pregnancy? Best not. Some plant oils--including fennel, basil, thyme, and myrrh -- shouldn't be used during pregnancy because of suspected physiological effects on the baby. Can I get a massage during pregnancy? Yes, if you use a masseuse trained in prenatal massage. Make sure you're propped up on your left side with a pillow, or ask for a special table with a hole in the middle for your belly. Some experts suggest avoiding massages during the first trimester, so check with your doctor first. Can I get reflexology during pregnancy? No. Foot massages can stimulate contractions, so it's best to avoid the risk. Can I get a facial during pregnancy? Simple at-home and spa facials are generally safe. But skip professional facials that use a galvanic current (an electrical micro-current used to help tone muscles); herbal facials during your first trimester, particularly if you're experiencing morning sickness (the strong, sweet scents may worsen it); and peels containing glycolic acid. Can I use acne treatments during pregnancy? Avoid Retin-A, other topical retinoids, and salicylic acid. Creams with glycolic or azelaic acid are fine, but check with your doctor first. Can I go to a tanning salon during pregnancy? There's no conclusive evidence that tanning beds are harmful to a developing fetus, but there is plenty of proof that they're dangerous to you, namely by increasing your risk of developing skin cancer. Lying in a tanning booth can also raise your body temperature to a level that may be hazardous to your baby, particularly during your first trimester. Never mind that hormone changes might mean that your skin tans unevenly or that you develop large brown patches known as melasma. If you're looking for a sun-kissed glow, try a self-tanner, which is harmless to both you and your baby.
